Diverticular Disease and Diverticulitis
Diverticular Disease and Diverticulitis are conditions that can affect the colon. Diverticular disease occurs when small pockets or diverticula form in the colon wall due to excessive pressure. If these diverticula become inflamed or infected, Diverticulitis develops.
Symptoms of Diverticular Disease and Diverticulitis include abdominal pain, cramps, nausea, and fever. Treatment may include diet changes, medications, and in some cases, surgery. It is important to maintain a balanced diet rich in fiber to prevent these conditions.
diverticulosis
Diverticulosis is a condition that occurs when a lack of water and fiber in the digestive system causes the stool to harden.
As a result, the colon musculature has to work harder to move stool through the colon, creating extra pressure that weakens the muscular lining of the colon. This can lead to the formation of diverticula, which usually appear in the lower left side of the colon (sigmoid), although they can also appear in any other area of the colon.
In most cases, diverticula cause no symptoms and take years to form. However, when they do appear, they can manifest as abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or an urge to have a bowel movement. In some cases, they can also cause bleeding when having a bowel movement, requiring immediate medical attention. It is important to maintain a diet rich in fiber and water to prevent Diverticulosis.
Diverticulitis and its diagnosis
When diverticula become inflamed or infected, diverticulitis occurs. Although the source of the infection is unknown, it may begin when fecal matter blocks the opening of the diverticulum. This condition can lead to serious complications such as acute inflammation or rupture of a diverticulum.
The most common symptoms are abdominal pain, fever and chills, and in severe cases it can progress to generalized peritonitis of the abdominal cavity.
For the diagnosis of colon conditions, evaluation by a specialist is required, who will perform a medical history, a physical examination, and diagnostic tests.
Diagnostic tests include colonic enema, an X-ray that shows abnormalities in the colon such as diverticula or narrowing, rectosigmoidoscopy, which allows direct visualization of the lower colon using a flexible rectosigmoidoscope, and colonoscopy, which allows full exploration of the colon with a flexible endoscope.
treatment and prevention
Treatment depends on the condition of the diverticula and the severity of the symptoms. In mild cases, changing dietary habits can be managed medically and kept in control. Medications may be required to relax the colon muscles and relieve pain. In some cases, additional treatments are required to control the condition.
If symptoms of diverticulitis occur, the doctor may start treatment with a liquid diet and oral antibiotics, and if the response is favourable, a high-fiber diet and plenty of fluids should be started. If symptoms are severe or there is no response to initial treatment, hospitalization and administration of intravenous fluids and antibiotics are required. Surgery may be required if there is no response to medical treatment or if a complication arises.
The prevention of diverticular disease is based on maintaining a diet rich in fiber and liquids, which softens and facilitates the transport of fecal matter throughout the colon. If symptoms of diverticulitis occur, it is important to seek medical attention immediately to avoid serious complications.
In cases where surgery is required, it can be performed using traditional surgery or the laparoscopic approach, the latter being preferred for its benefits, such as minimal pain, rapid recovery, shorter hospitalization time, and excellent cosmetic results.
